Botanical Name :- Terminalia chebula

Family :- Combretaceae (हरीतकी कुल )

  1. According to Acharya Charak – Kustaghna, Kashaghna, Arsoghna.
  2. According to Acharya Sushruta – Triphala, Aamalkyadi, Parushkadi.

English Name :- Chebulic myrobalan

Morphological Description :-

  • Haritaki is a large deciduous tree with umbrella shaped crowded branches.
  • Height = Approx 25 m with girth 2.5 m
  • Stem bark is dark brown, exfloaiting in irregular woody scales.
  • Leaves are sub-opposite, ovate or oblong ovate.
  • A pair of large gland are present at top of petiole.
  • Flowers occurs in spikes arising from upper axiles.
  • Flowers are yellowish-white and emit a strong offensive odour.
  • Flowering :- April- June
  • Fruiting :- November – March
  • Fruits are yellowish-green in colour, obvoid or ellipsoid hard and 5-6 ribbed when dry.

विजया रोहिणी चैव पूतना चामृताभया ।
जीवन्ती चेतकी चेति पथ्याया: सप्त जातयः।।

There are seven varieties of haritaki, classified on the basis of region, guna and karma. These are Vijaya, Rohini, Putna, Amrita, Abhaya, Jiwanti & Chetaki.

Chemical Constituents :-

  • Tannins,
  • Chebulagic acid,
  • Chebulinic acid,
  • Corialigin,
  • Amino acids(18),
  • Phosphoric acid, Succinic acid, Quinic acid .. etc.
  • On ripening :- Tannins decreases and Acids increases.

Rasapanchaka :-

  • Rasa – पञ्चरस , अलवण , कषायप्रधान
  • Guna – Laghu, Ruksha
  • Virya – Ushna
  • Vipaka – Madhur
  • Prabhava – Tridoshahara

Doshakarma :-

Sansthanik Karma :-

  1. Bahya :- Shothhar, Vednasthapana, Vranasodhana, Vranaropana.
  2. Abhyantara :- Balya & Medhya of nadisansthana, Hrit & Shonit sthaoana, kaphaghna, Dipana, pachana, jwaraghna etc..

Contraindications :-

  • Atikhinna, Atishina, Ruksha, Atikrisha, Pittadhiyukta, Garbhvati etc.
  • Trishna, Mukhashosha, Navajwara ( due to kashaya pradhana and ushna virya)

Useful part :- Fruit

Dose :- 3-7 gms ( churna)

Rituharitaki :-

Haritaki provides restorative effect i.e. rasayana by cleansing the channels of body. But for producing the rasayana effect it needs various supportive dravyas in different ritus i.e. aupana. For eg. anupana for varsha ritu is saindhava lavana .
